Read the light
Start with bright light, then acclimate gradually. Sudden exposure to intense direct sun can scar plants that were grown under shade cloth or indoors.
Water the soil, not the calendar
Check the growing medium before watering. Most cacti prefer a complete dry-down, while tropical plants usually want more consistent moisture.
Give roots some air
Use a fast-draining mix and a pot with a drainage hole. Dense, wet soil is one of the fastest ways to lose a collector plant.
Respect the season
Growth slows when temperatures or daylight drop. Reduce watering during dormancy and resume gradually when active growth returns.
The first 72 hours
When a new plant arrives
- Unpack promptly. Remove wrapping carefully and inspect the plant in bright, indirect light.
- Let it settle. Shipping is stressful. Avoid immediate repotting or heavy watering unless the plant clearly needs intervention.
- Acclimate slowly. Introduce stronger light over several days rather than moving directly into full sun.
- Document concerns. If anything looks wrong, take photos of the plant and packaging before making changes.
